1 Involve an occupational rphtaeist in the planning stages to ensure that the building and playgrounds + access from the building to the playground is handicap accessible2 Bring swings back to the playground! Swinging is an extremely good activity for self-regulation, which is needed for the huge increase of students who have attention difficultiesautism. Wheelchair swings are also needed.3 Due to the expanse of technology and families where both parents work, many children simply don’t know how to play outside. Low muscle tone and poor strength are rampant throughout our schools. Therefore, teachers need to participate more in recess to improve the participation of all students, rather than sitting on the side and observing. This would also improve safety for using the swings, for example.4 Outdoor spaces for recess, exercise, and learning experiences that are shielded from the sun and rain to reduce heat and skin damage, as well as to provide recess during inclement weather, are essential5 Outdoor water fountains, both drinking and ornamental, to support health of humans and wildlife, such as birds. The sound of water can be very calming in our stressed out world.6 Gardens, managed by staff and students, to grow fruits and vegetables for use in the cafeteria and cut flowers for public areas7 Greenhouses could be used to grow additional plants for vocational and life skills training, as well as to sell to the community and to use throughout the school to improve indoor air quality Need covered areas for parents and buses to drop off students and to make deliveries to the schools9 Outer doors, particularly the front door and primary staff entrances, should be accessible so that they may be easily opened hands-free using CAC cardsother security devices for entrance to buildings to increase security and accountability11 Parking lots should allow free entrance during drop-off and pick-up times so that itinerant staff are able to move more easily between schools12 Additional handicap parking is necessary at many schools due to the increase in disabled veterans on staff, as well as for parents of children who have special needs. These spaces must be available for access throughout the day. Access from the handicap parking to the building must be level and wide enough to safely traverse. It would also be helpful if the access was covered.13Improved maintenance of trees that overhang walkways so that adults can safely walk upright underneath them is needed14 Informal outdoor seating areas, such as a couple of benches in a butterfly gardencovered benches to shield from the sun would allow casual groupings and lunchbreaks outside.15 Water misters in the hotter locales, such as are used for the long lines at Disney World and other attractions would be helpful16 Emergency call boxes and first aid kits should be accessible on playgrounds17 PA systems should project to the playgrounds and playing fields when necessary18 Playgrounds should be fenced to keep students from running into trafficfrom wandering off of campus19 Below ground tornado shelters should be available
